Winter Season 2023

Winter Holiday Season and You

As the holiday season barrels in with all its bells and whistles, it's easy to feel like a participant in a chaotic circus act. It is a time filled with family and friend fun as well as leaving most people feeling as if they are juggling too many balls at once. That's why self-care during this season is crucial.

I want to take a moment to explore what self-care truly means, and just as importantly, what it doesn't, and discover how to make it a personal and authentic part of your life!

What is Self-Care?

Self-care is about tending to your own well-being with the same love and attention you'd give to a cherished friend during challenging times. It's not selfish. It's about deliberately tending to your physical, mental, and emotional well-being with a side of self-love. Think of it as a way to take a moment and remember you are human too.

What Self-Care Isn’t (Busting some myths)

Self-Care Isn't Selfish:

Taking time for self-care doesn't mean neglecting your responsibilities or loved ones. It's about ensuring you're in the best state of mind and body to be present for others.

Self-Care Isn't Just Indulgence:

While indulgent spa days and pampering are delightful, self-care goes beyond that. It also involves managing stress, setting boundaries, and making healthier choices in your daily life.

Self-Care Isn't One-Size-Fits-All:

Self-care is deeply personal. What works for one person may not work for another. It's about discovering the activities and routines that resonate with you and help you feel rejuvenated.

Self-Care Strategies

Setting Boundaries with Love: During the holidays, boundaries are your best friends. Have an honest conversation with yourself about what you can realistically handle. It's okay to say no when it's necessary, and it's an act of self-love.

Plan and Organize Your Way: Create a schedule, break tasks into manageable steps, and find a system that works for you, whether it's a traditional planner or a digital calendar.

Savor Mindful Moments: Mindfulness is a powerful tool for managing stress. Find a quiet space, close your eyes, and take a few minutes to breathe deeply and be present. Let go of judgment and savor the here and now.

Listen to your body: Self-care also involves nourishing your body. Fueling yourself appropriately so you have the energy to do the things you enjoy.

Gift Yourself Rest: Sleep is a precious gift to yourself. Establish a soothing bedtime routine, disconnect from screens, and allow your body to rest and rejuvenate.

Dance and Play: Physical activity is a secret weapon against holiday stress. Whether it's a joyful dance, a brisk walk, or a full workout, find time for physical activities that bring you joy.

Reach Out for a Chat: Remember, you're not alone in experiencing holiday stress. Lean on friends, family, or a trusted confidant for a heartfelt conversation about your feelings and concerns.

Count Your Gratitudes: As you take a moment to reflect, consider what you're grateful for. Write them down in a journal to remind yourself of the goodness in your life.

Unplug and Reconnect: Disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with reality. Set aside time each day to be fully present and engage with loved ones and experiences.

Be Your Own MVP: Lastly, give yourself a small gift of self-indulgence. It could be an afternoon to read your favorite book, a cozy night in, or anything that brings a smile to your face.

Remember

Self-care isn't a luxury—it's a necessity, especially during the holiday season. By setting loving boundaries, practicing mindfulness, and prioritizing your well-being, you can navigate this time of year with a warm heart and an open spirit. Remember, self-care is a unique gift you give to yourself, allowing you to share your love and presence authentically with others during the holidays.
